This week I was invited to check out Freshii & try the Morrocan inspired quinoa bowl that is available for a limited time! Honestly, I was really looking forward to trying this bowl knowing that I could customize it to fit my eating style (primarily plant based). So knowing that this lunch would be full of wellth approved ingredients (think unrefined and nutrient dense REAL food)! 

Ok, so how is Freshii different than other on the go food options?

Freshii has been on a mission to change the way the world eats. By making superfoods like kale and quinoa convenient and affordable for every citizen of the world, while continuing to introduce the latest culinary health trends, Freshii is truly redefining the fast-casual space. 

Freshii's menu is constantly evolving. Their in-house nutritionist is forever testing and tasting the latest trends and then finding ways to bring them to the world. They have 7 different menu categories – bowls, burritos, salads, wraps, soups, smoothies & juices – and each one is full of innovation. Hey, they don’t say #EatEnergize for nothing!

So how do I modify my food to make it wellth approved? Well let me just say that this bowl is already a star! It's made with quinoa, spinach, walnuts, chickpeas, feta cheese, dried cranberries, cucumber, carrots & a spicy harissa tahini dressing! Now, if you're plant-based you can swap out the feta for another one of their many vegetable options, I opted for avocado (making this bowl avo-control). Another thing that I aways request is dressing on the side! Why? I just like to be in control of how much dressing I add to my salad (less is more in my books). 

Lets talk nutrition |

I'm not one for counting calories but I am game for counting nutrients! At meal time the goal is to choose foods that have anti-inflammatory properties, are high in anti-oxidants, support steady energy levels, are rich in fibre for satiety, contain amino acids to support metabolism, are a source of healthy fats to support cognitive function and hormonal health (I could go on). The point is, all foods contain energy (energy = calories), and while some foods may be lower in calories than others, they may not offer the same nutritional value to support thriving health! Rather than looking at calories or macronutrients, I place a greater emphasis on micronutrients!

This is definitely something that Freshii strives to do also. The believe: 

Calorie counting does not consider if a food is natural and unprocessed, or distinguish between the type of fat, protein and carbohydrates it contains. Calories from complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains and vegetables, will help to maintain blood sugar levels and provide the body with sustained energy. Simple carbohydrates, such as refined grains and added sugars, will have the opposite effect, spiking insulin levels and contributing to increased cravings and appetite.

Some of the most nutritious food on the planet is also the most caloric. Although calorie-dense, foods such as avocados, nuts and seeds contain essential fats, vitamins and minerals to support a healthy weight and metabolism. The nutritional benefit from these foods far outweigh the number of calories they contain. We believe that if you focus on eating healthy food, you don’t have to count calories. As long as you fuel yourself with the proper energy and nutrients, your body will take care of the rest - which includes keeping you at a healthy weight.

However, if you have specific health goals in mind there are a number of ways that Freshii can accommodate you!

MORE GREENS, LESS GRAINS | Quinoa and brown rice are known for their impressive health profiles, but can also be quite calorie-dense if consumed in large amounts. When ordering your favourite bowl, upgrade to a kale base or opt for half grains, half greens.

PACK ON PROTEIN | Protein-rich foods are highly satiating, leading to reduced hunger and cravings. Be sure to include lean proteins with your Freshii menu items - choose from chicken, tofu, falafel, hard-boiled eggs and beans.

DITCH THE DAIRY | Cheese is an excellent source of calcium, but no matter which way you slice it, most cheese is high in calories and fat. If you’re mindful of numbers, substitute the cheese for non-dairy sources of calcium such as broccoli or kale.

DON’T GO NUTS | Nuts are packed with nutrients, but they are also packed with calories and (healthy) fats. Incorporate nuts into your daily diet in order to reap their nutritional benefits, but remember that portion control is key - ask for a half serving.

DRESS LIGHTLY | We prepare our salad dressings fresh in-house with heart-healthy oils. Ask for your menu item to be lightly dressed or use balsamic vinegar or lemon juice in place of dressing.
